Trail and Error Travelling (TaET)

(Travel)

I am a travelling virgin. I will never claim otherwise, but during the last few months, I have had this urge to break out of my virginity. As a result of this, I have inventet my very own travelling concept, which I for now call “Trial and Error Travelling” or TaET for short.I have done several charter trips to several countries in Europe, but I am not a sheep and do not enjoy the pre-planned, pre-digested or pre-everything that these trips consist of. I do not like beeing placed in a plane and stay with the same people, meet the same kind of people, eat at the same restaurants (as the same kind of people do), read the same books, look at the same things, say “wow” to the same tiny little nomade-baby strung up in a baby-nomade-hammock … I need something else. I need to break my own barriers and do it my way. The concept is simple, not yet fully “developed”, though, and consist of the following:

  1. You have to go to a place someone has recommended and you should not know much about it (neither culture or country). Basic knowledge like religion, voltage, currency are OK. (The more foreign the country and culture is, the bigger suprise you will get)
  2. You are not allowed to read any travel guides or books about the place (this forces you to meet people to find the best places to go)
  3. You are not allowed to plan anything, apart from what city to arrive in and where to go and look for accomodation the first night. (If you go to Bangkok, it is OK to know that Khao San Road is a good place to start to look for accomodation)
  4. You should opt for the cheapes accomodation. Air conditioned hotel rooms in the top price range is to easy
  5. You should buy the ticket with least amount of time to travel. The best thing is to travel very far on the same day as ticket purchase, but departure within 2 days is OK.
  6. You are not allowed to bring luggage, other than your toiletry kit, some basic medication and a roll of toiletpaper. You are not allowed to bring any clothes and the smaller the bag, the better. A shoulderbag is preferred.

I will refine the “rules” as time goes by.

The point of this way of travelling, is to experience how to investigate both yourself and foreign cultures and countries without any “must see” and “must do” predjudices you have, after reading far too much about a place. It is a scary concept at first, but when you get used to it, the point is to find a new destination, that pushes your barriers a tiny inch further (the most crazy people will end up doing this kind of travelling, by going to a warzone somewhere - although it is not recommendable, it could be “fun”)
