Back from Roskilde
(Events)
Finally back from Roskilde festival after 5 days of sun, beer, very good company (Tina and “the boys”) and music. Have had a few hours of sleep and feel now a bit refreshed. 5 days without a proper bed/pillow, toilet, shower, food or clean clothes can put anyone to the test.We left Copenhagen wednesday midday and after a few stops on the way, we arrived at our camp, that we put up 4 days before, in the evening. Someone had moved our tent and we had to struggle to find a way to place all tents, so nobody would get angry. The tent that had taken my tents place, belonged to a mysterious french guy who did not speak very much english. He was out on a beer-mission when we arrived, so we had to talk to the neighbour and make sure that he was not a big buff guy, before we decided to move his tent. It was a small tent so it couln’t fit a big guy anyway. He came back when the tents were arranged to our satisfaction (imagine playing tetris with tents) and he was not very happy. On the other side - he was not very angry either, but due to his non-english way of communicating, we never really knew if we pissed him off. Later we “borrowed” some beers from him and promised to return them … but … we didn’t.
The absolute highlight of the festival, had to be Roger Waters performance of “Dark Side of The Moon”. I bought my tickets to the festival 10 seconds after I learned that he would play, and I was not dissapointed. The concert was divided into to parts - some old songs from The Wall, The Final Cut, Wish You Were Here and others and the whole DSOTM album + 4 encores. The setup was amazing. Very powerful speakers were places around the huge area in front of the stage to ensure quadrophonic soundscapes. I didn’t know what to expect but I must admit - I almost went into shock when I first heard the effects. I can’t remember on what song we first heard the effects, but it sounded like there was a band standing on a stage right behind us and this band was competing with Mr. Waters on the stage in front of us. Everyone had to turn their heads to see if this actually was true. It is without any doubt the most surreal concert, audiowise, I have ever experienced, and I would be surprised if it can ever be contested. Imagine listening to ‘On the Run’ and the soundeffects come from all sides. I wasn’t even standing in the dead center … I was more off to the right, and almost out of the “sound quadrant” but every sound, every effect was crystal clear and it was mind-absorbing. I kind of had the feeling of what Mr. Rogers and the rest of Pink Floyd must have had on their overdrugged minds, whilst creating the album.
The most chocking experience at the festival, was a guy who apparently got a kick out of watching girls urinate. At the festival, there aren’t that many toilets and most of the ones who are there, are not very clean and they are very occupied. To overcome this problem, many girls squat near a fence and let it rip, as most men normally do. At one place, they have build a woman-pissoir for shy girls to pee without any disturbances. Tina needed to go to the toilet, but opted for the proper toilet and I had to stand outside waiting for her. While I was standing there, I noticed this strange/unique man who was prowling for something. He had some scars in his 40+ year old face and I found him very peculiar. I noticed that he went up to pee near the woman-pissoir and kept an eye on him for some time. After watching him for a while I figured out that he was actually having a “pee” every 2 minutes, and while he was having a “pee”, he was looking in on the girls squatting inside the little women-pissoir. When Tina came out from the toilet, I told her to watch this guy. She got shocked by what she saw, and I told her what I have seen. Some other girls listened in on the conversation and asked about this man. He must have heard us, because he left right after.
The most pleasant surprise at the festival, was Birdy Nam Nam, and the most dissappointing surpise was Matisyahu. Guns ‘n Roses was OK, I could sense the past greatness of Axl, but the concert was almost a joke. The most annoying surprise was a song that I heard, that I really like, but I cannot remember on what concert I heard this song. I want to get it, but I don’t know who plays it. The one thing I missed the most, was a proper heavy-metal concert. At some point during the festival, I need some serious energy pumping out of the speakers, but this was a very mellow festival. Deftones was OK but not enough. I missed Tool because Tina wanted to take a nap - in the tent and I decided to wait for her. I fell asleep myself, and woke up 3 hours later when all the music I wanted to see, had ended.
All in all, this festival is on the top 2 list and I look forward to 2007. Thanx to anyone I met, anyone who played, anyone who got drunk, anyone I met and got drunk with, the girl/woman with the chockolatemousse and the lake we could swim in, for making this a really good festival.
