One night in Bangkok

(2006, Thailand, Travel)

I am currently sitting in an internetcafe in Bangkok trying to figure out what to do, where to go, what to eat (more important: what NOT to eat) and how to be polite saying no to all the “good” offers given every meter. For those of you who don’t know why I’m here - here’s the short version

I need to get away from computers, mobilephones, structure, stress and all that nonsense we try to do and achieve every day. So I decided to go somewhere … somewhere far away. Yesterday (monday) I booked a flight to Bangkok tuesday afternoon, returning April 16th to Copenhagen. The concept of this trip has been “cheapest, longest and most foreign experience”. That’s why I ended up in Bangkok with only my passport, some money, camera, ipod, an extra pair of socks/underwear and medicine. I guess my medicine takes up more space than my clothes. Good to know, that I can survive any disease, but if it starts to rain - I’m in trouble :-] I have nothing planned and I have no idea what to do next. I think I have to try to go out on the street and find some “fellow travellers” and hook up with them, but right now I need to try and find some safe food. I’ve heard there is a McDonalds up the road … maybe I’ll try that, to get an easy start. I have also found a room way above normal Thai standard, after a 19 hours journey I need a proper bed and a shower. Too bad the bed is rock hard and the room is located right above something that sounds like a nightclub. If this is above normal Thai standard, I’m worried. I’m interrested to see if I can get some sleep tonight - I didn’t get much on the plane, but I managed to lie across 2,5 seats, so I stole a few hours of shuteye.

Lessons learned so far:

  • never open a youghurt 35000 feet up in the air with the opening facing towards you. The youghurt were not at the same air pressure as me, and I got purple stains all over my offwhite sweater
  • never try too hard to look for keys on a thai keyboard. If you try to look for e.g. the ” key - you can suddenly end up closing the window (and the mail you try to write), and you have to write it all over again.

Current worst fears:

  • The food
  • The probability of getting no sleep tonight
  • The probability of not finding anyone to travel with, which will leave me here in the middle of nowhere/bangkok. There are plenty of “non-chinese looking” people here, so I think I’ll be fine
  • Beeing cheated by the locals. To haggle is almost the national sport, so I need to start practising, otherwise they’ll take all my money
  • Thai standard “rooms”

So … that’s it for now. I have to get out in the “burning” 33 degrees evening. Have no idea if I get to see the sun, but I’m well prepared with my 15 SPF (I think)

Ciao (or as they say in Thailand: *a lot of strange noises*),
