Deep inside many hospitals, a vital part of the human reproduction cycle take place. The last part of this cycle is a part where men has been reduced to being a non-functional piece of property. In this situation, men have to do what men can only do: observe. We have to subdue our wishes, wants and needs. But during these observations, some rather disturbing sights emerge. February 2nd. Friday afternoon. An otherwise normal day at work, followed by a couple of drinks with colleagues. Tina was 5 days overdue in her pregnancy and I, being nervous by the minute, reluctantly left the ongoing party while being sensible. The party promised Singstar on Playstation 2. Sometimes, days pass by and at the end of it, you just sit back and think “What the f**k just happened today?!”. Sometimes, you can not do anything else than just drop your jaws in admiration for some of the madness you have seen during the day. People in South America are religious - I have never doubted that. Everywhere I go, people are crossing themselves, they carry necklaces with Maria Magdalena and crucifixes, there are churches everywhere and cars are styles with phrases like “God is my friend”. It is clearly a huge difference from home, where people go to church once every year. But in South America, I have been told that God is actually looking for me. (more…)

My health has been fine ever since Venezuela. If I rule out a period over a couple of weeks in Colombia, where I had a constant running nose, I have not had any problems with my health at all. I was expecting to get sick in Bolivia again, because that is what happens to most people. But I am not in Bolivia and I have already been hospitalised. (more…)

The sun is high on the sky. The waves rolls up on the white beaches and the stranded white bodies of the gringos. The water is not particularly warm and the wind has been gloriously missing for far too long. Sitting on the beach, together with the other stranded white bodies, I am catching up with the tan as I wait for the perfect wind to make me a proper kitesurfer. (more…)

Driving through the Ecuadorian countryside with white knuckles, I couldn’t wait to get away from the big city. I have said it before and I say it again: I do not like big cities. Quito was a gringo central, and I hardly spoke any word of Spanish. I like to and I need to get to smaller places where the waving of the arms are not as big. Ecuador is relatively tiny and is rarely a country occupying my mind. Before arriving here, I knew of one thing particular for Ecuador: the Equator. An invisible thin line dividing the south from the north. A line with neutral energy. But while leaving Ecuador, I am walking on my own fine line. The fine line of anger and desire. (more…)

Ecuador is a country where the adrenaline can pump through your body almost 24 hours a day. You can enjoy beach, big cities, volcanoes, jungle and desert within these 24 hours and I have never been more surprised about a country. Knowing I was unable to enjoy any of it, I still worked hard for Ecuador to keep me in the country - just for a few more days. (more…)
